WELCOME!  ˇBIENVENIDOS!

In SPAN 101, the main objective is to develop skills in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the Spanish language.  Since the class will be conducted almost entirely in Spanish, your ability to communicate in the language will develop along with your knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the language.

I. ATTENDANCE.

Attending class everyday is especially important in language classes. Accordingly, I will deduct a point from your total grade for every absence over FOUR (4). Three tardies equal one absence. ALL ABSENCES--NO MATTER IF "EXCUSED" OR NOT--COUNT TOWARD THIS TOTAL.

However, students may make up any exam, quiz, or other assignment if the absence occurs as a result of participation in an official Austin College athletic or other event, a serious illness, or some other unavoidable circumstance beyond the student's control.

 II. TESTING.

There will be three major exams, according to the following schedule.  THE FINAL EXAM WILL BE COMPREHENSIVE.  MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!!

                   Tuesday, September  19                   Exam I (1 & 2)

                   Tuesday, October 17                          Exam II (3 & 4)

Thursday, December  7, 12-2pm     FINAL EXAM

  III.  GRADING.

  The breakdown is as follows:

3 major exams                                                                45 % (15% each)
Oral component 21%
Workbook and Internet assignments        17%
Quizzes                                    12%
Participation                                               5%

A. ORAL COMPONENT.  (21%).

The oral component will consist of three presentaciones.  Presentaciones are one minute dialogues (with a partner) or monologues presented to the class.

Each student will sign up to do 3 presentaciones during the semester.  Points will be awarded according to the following system:

Presentaciones (21 possible points    7 pts.----good presentation

4 pt.----acceptable presentation

1 pt.-----less than acceptable

The oral component is worth 21% of your total grade, and there are 21 possible points.

B.  WORKBOOK AND INTERNET ASSIGNMENTS (17%).

You will be responsible for completing the workbook and internet assignments as indicated in the course outline and in class. Regarding the workbook, if the assignment ends in the middle of a page, complete the page, but hold on to it until you turn it in with the next assignment. You will receive full credit only after you have completed the assignment, checked your answers with another color of ink, and handed in the assignment on time.

C.  QUIZZES (12%).

I do not believe in pop quizzes, but I am a firm believer in quizzes.  We will have about 8 brief quizzes throughout the semester.  I will always tell you the day before that we're having a quiz and what it will cover.

D. Participation (5%).  In order to receive these points, the student must be pay attention (most of the time) in class and the student must make an attempt to answer if called upon. Mistakes are fine, but you must have a good attitude and put forth effort to earn these participation points.

IV.  Academic Integrity Policy

The College's Standards of Academic Integrity are assumed to apply to your work for this course. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Students are responsible for knowing what constitutes academic dishonesty and the consequences for violating the Academic Integrity Principle at Austin College. Austin College seeks to provide reasonable accommodations for all individuals with disabilities and will comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations and guidelines. It is the responsibility of the student to register with and provide verification of academic accommodation needs to the Director of the Academic Skills Center as soon as possible.
