Saturday, January 11th: Las Playas

Each of the beaches that we will visit offers a different type of atmosphere. Students will become more familiar with the 5th region of Chile during this excursion. Horcón has a population of approximately 600 people and is known for its fishermen. The ocean is very calm here, which makes it possible for the fishermen to rest their boats in the bay. Students can see horses pulling the boats out of the water while they enjoy seafood empanadas. During January and February, visitors flock to Horcón. Paupudo is one of the central zone's distinct pedestrian beaches. Bring a jacket, because the wind is much stronger here than in Horcón. Students typically find Zapallar to be the most impressive of the three beaches. This pedestrian beach is tucked away in a breathtaking cove which is surrounded by stunning houses. A small hike will take students to a point above the beach which overlooks both the ocean and Zapallar.

Meet in the Viña plaza at the theatre

Bus departs at 10:00 am

Sunday, January 12th: Isla Negra

This excursion will take students to the most popular of Pablo Neruda's many houses. The house is located south of Valparaíso and contains his most treasured collections. This is also the house where he passed away and was buried, along with Maltilde Urrutia (his mistress who later became his wife). This house offers a beautiful view of Isla Negra beach, and nautical aspects can be found all over the house as well as on the surrounding grounds. Isla Negra is not located on an island, but the area in which the house is situated was given this name due to its appearance. The area appears as if it were an island made up of large black stones. During this excursion, students will learn a lot about Chilean culture and the Chilean people's love for Pablo Neruda.

Meet in the Viña plaza at the theatre

Bus departs at 9:30 am.

Students will bring a sack lunch

Chartered bus ride to Isla Negra
