WELCOME!  ¡BIENVENIDOS!

In Sp 101, the main objective is to develop skills in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the Spanish language.  Since the class will be conducted almost entirely in Spanish, your ability to communicate in the language will develop along with your knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the language.

I. ATTENDANCE.

Attending class everyday is especially important in the summer when one day is equal to three regular semester days.  Accordingly, the penalty for absences will begin to accrue after fewer have occurred.  I will deduct a point from your total grade for every absence over TWO (2).  Arriving late is also more of a hindrance in the summer.  Three tardies equal one absence.

  II. TESTING.

There will be three major exams, according to the following schedule.  THE FINAL EXAM WILL BE COMPREHENSIVE.  MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!!

                Fri., June 16                                 Exam I (Ante todo, 1 & 2)

                Fri., June 30                                  Exam II (3 & 4)

Fri., July 21                                    FINAL EXAM (COMPREHENSIVE)

  III.  GRADING.

  The breakdown is as follows:

3 major exams                                                                45 % (15% each)
Oral component                                                21%
Writing assignments                                                  5%
Reading assignments                                                  5%
Workbook                             12%
Quizzes                                                   12%

A.  ORAL COMPONENT.  (21%).

The oral component will consist of three presentaciones.  Presentaciones are one minute dialogues (with a partner) or monologues presented to the class.

Each student will sign up to do 3 presentaciones during the six-week session.  Points will be awarded according to the following system:

  Presentaciones (21 possible points)

7 pts.----good presentation

4 pt.----acceptable presentation

1 pt.-----less than acceptable

The oral component is worth 21% of your total grade, and there are 21 possible points.

  B. WRITING ASSIGNMENTS (5%).

There will be two brief writing assignments as indicated in the course outline below.  Some parts will be written in class, others at home.

  C.  READING ASSIGNMENTS (5%).

There will be two short readings.  Grades for this portion of the course will be based on the completion of exercises.

  D.  WORKBOOK (12%).

You will be responsible for completing the workbook assignments as indicated in the course outline.  If the assignment ends in the middle of a page, complete the page, but hold on to it until you turn it in with the next assignment.  You will receive full credit only after you have completed the assignment, checked your answers with another color of ink, and handed in the assignment on time.

  E.  QUIZZES (12%).

I do not believe in pop quizzes, but I am a firm believer in quizzes.  We will have about 8 brief quizzes throughout the semester.  I will always tell you the day before that we're having a quiz and what it will cover.

IV. Practicing your Spanish using the Puntos website.

The point of this class is to teach you as much Spanish as possible. If you want to learn more, and possibly earn some extra credit, here's how, according to the Puntos website:  "This Online Learning Center is designed to enhance your learning. Book-specific content like quizzing, cultural activities with Web links, audio, and video can all be accessed by choosing from the list.... These materials are designed to help you succeed in your course. Some of these features may be "premium" content. For access to premium content, you will need a registration code. The registration code is included on the card that came with your new textbook. If you have already registered, just enter your username and password when prompted."  (taken from the Puntos website)
