¡BIENVENIDOS! WELCOME!

I. OBJECTIVES.

In Sp 23, the main objective is to develop skills in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the Spanish language. Since the class will be conducted almost entirely in Spanish, your ability to communicate in Spanish will develop along with your knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the language.

II. ATTENDANCE.

Attending class everyday is always important in language classes, but it is especially critical in summer classes. Accordingly, I will deduct a point from your total grade for every absence over TWO (2). Three tardies equal one absence. ALL ABSENCES--NO MATTER IF "EXCUSED" OR NOT--COUNT TOWARD THIS TOTAL.

However, students may make up any exam, quiz, or other assignment if the absence occurs as a result of participation in an official Austin College athletic or other event, a serious illness, or some other unavoidable circumstance beyond the student's control.

  III. GRADING.

A. Two Major Exams 30%
B. Final Exam                                                    25%
C. Writing Component                                           6%
D. Workbook  8%
E. Lab                                                                                6%
F. Quizzes and lecturas (readings)                              10%
 G. Oral Component                                                           15%

NB. Late homework will not receive full credit.

A. TWO MAJOR EXAMS (30%).

Please mark the following dates on your calendar. Only under extenuating circumstances will a student be granted permission to make up an exam. There will be TWO major exams, according to the following schedule:

Wed.,  June 18          Examen I (Capítulos 13 y 14)

  Mon. Jul. 2             Examen II (Capítulos 15 y 16)

  B. CUMULATIVE EXAM (25%).

There will also be a cumulative exam covering Chapters 13-18 on Wed./Fri., Jul. 16/18.

C. WRITING COMPONENT. (6%).

All students will complete two compositions during the semester.

D. WORKBOOK (8%)

E. LAB (6%).

You will be responsible for completing the workbook and lab book assignments as indicated in the course outline. Regarding the workbook, if the assignment ends in the middle of a page, complete the page, but hold on to it until you turn it in with the next assignment. You will receive full credit only after you have completed the assignment, checked your answers with another color of ink, and handed in the assignment on time.

F. QUIZZES and lecturas (10%).

I do not believe in pop quizzes, but I am a firm believer in quizzes. We will have about 8 brief quizzes throughout the semester. I will always tell you the day before that we're having a quiz and what it will cover.

The lecturas will consist of three readings which students will analyze outside of class. Students' grades will be based on short quizzes.

G. ORAL COMPONENT. 15%.

The oral component will consist of two parts: two presentaciones and one entrevista. Presentaciones are two minute dialogues (with a partner) or monologues presented to the class.  The entrevista is a personal interview with the instructor.

Each student will sign up to do two presentaciones.  Points will be awarded according to the following system:

  Presentaciones/entrevista(15 possible points)

  5 pts.----good presentation/interview

  2 pt.----acceptable presentation/interview

  1 pt.-----less than acceptable

The oral component is worth 15% of your total grade, and there are 15 possible points.

IV. Practicing your Spanish, pen pals, and the Puntos website.

The point of this class is to teach you as much Spanish as possible. If you want to learn more, and possibly earn some extra credit, here's how:

  1. Complete activities on the CD-ROM for Puntos.  It's available on reserve at the circulation desk, Abell Library.  It contains useful vocabulary and grammatical exercises that allow you to check your work electronically.

  2. practice Puntos vocabulary on the web http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/foreignlang/puntos/quizzes/index.html

  3. participate in Spanish "chat rooms" http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/foreignlang/puntos/prechat.htm

  4. complete other internet Puntos-related activities http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/foreignlang/puntos/sbranch.htm

All extra credit will be awarded at the discretion of the instructor.

V. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

The College's Standards of Academic Integrity are assumed to apply to your work for this course.

  VI. Course Outline**
