¡BIENVENIDOS! WELCOME!

I. OBJECTIVES.

In Sp 12, the main objective is to develop skills in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the Spanish language. Since the class will be conducted almost entirely in Spanish, your ability to communicate in Spanish will develop along with your knowledge of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the language.

II. ATTENDANCE.

Attending class everyday is especially important in language classes. Accordingly, I will deduct a point from your total grade for every absence over FOUR (4). Three tardies equal one absence. ALL ABSENCES--NO MATTER IF "EXCUSED" OR NOT--COUNT TOWARD THIS TOTAL.

However, students may make up any exam, quiz, or other assignment if the absence occurs as a result of participation in an official Austin College athletic or other event, a serious illness, or some other unavoidable circumstance beyond the student's control.

A. TWO MAJOR EXAMS (20%).

Please mark the following dates on your calendar. Only under extenuating circumstances will a student be granted permission to make up an exam. There will be TWO major exams, according to the following schedule:

Wed., Sep. 25 Examen I (Capítulos 7 y 8)

Thur., Oct. 17 Examen II (Capítulos 9 y 10)

B. FINAL EXAM (20%).

There will also be a cumulative exam covering Chapters 7-12 on Thur., Nov. 14.

C. WRITING COMPONENT. (6%).

All students will complete two compositions during the semester. Each composition will be a movie review of at least 250 words (approximately 1 and 1/2 pages in length).

D. WORLD WIDE WEB PROJECTS (20%).

Each student will complete five Web projects. The instructions for the first four projects is located at this web address: http://artemis.austincollege.edu/acad/cml/pduffey/sp12.7-12.html . These projects correspond to the themes of Chapters 7-12 (vacations, holidays, shopping, and health). The projects are due according to the dates listed in the course outline. Each project is worth 3% of your final grade.

The fifth Web project is a virtual journey. You and another student will take a trip to two or three Hispanic countries via the World Wide Web. You will prepare an oral presentation and a diary of your travels complete with pictures and conversations. For complete instructions see http://artemis.austincollege.edu/acad/cml/pduffey/sp12.html . This final Web project is worth 8% of your final grade.

E. WORKBOOK (6%)

F. LAB (3%).

You will be responsible for completing the workbook and lab book assignments as indicated in the course outline. Regarding the workbook, if the assignment ends in the middle of a page, complete the page, but hold on to it until you turn it in with the next assignment. You will receive full credit only after you have completed the assignment, checked your answers with another color of ink, and handed in the assignment on time.

G. QUIZZES (5%).

I do not believe in pop quizzes, but I am a firm believer in quizzes. We will have about 15 brief quizzes throughout the semester. I will always tell you the day before that we're having a quiz and what it will cover.

H. ORAL COMPONENT. (20%).

The oral component will consist of two parts: four presentaciones, and oneentrevista. Presentaciones are two minute dialogues (with a partner) or monologues presented to the class. The entrevista is a personal interview with me. It will be approximately five minutes in duration.

Each student will sign up to do 4 presentaciones, about one every two weeks. Points will be awarded according to the following system:

Presentaciones (20 possible points)

4 pts.----good presentation

2 pt.----acceptable presentation

1 pt.-----less than acceptable

Entrevista (5 possible points)

5 pts. ----good interview

3 pts ----acceptable

2 pt. -----less than acceptable

The oral component is worth 20% of your total grade, and there are 21 possible points.

IV. Extra practice outside of class, electronic resources, extra credit.

The point of this class is to teach you as much Spanish as possible. If you want to learn more, and possibly earn some extra credit, here's how:

1. Play some of the Spanish computer games that I have created for this course (these are especially handy when you're preparing for the exams.)

2. Get a Spanish-language pen pal via the internet. Go to http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/foreignlang/puntos/student/penpals.htm for more information.

3. Do other activities:

a. practice Puntos vocabulary on the web http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/foreignlang/puntos/quizzes/index.html

b. participate in Spanish "chat rooms" http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/foreignlang/puntos/prechat.htm

c. complete other internet Puntos-related activities http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/foreignlang/puntos/sbranch.htm

or the grammatical exercises at http://mld.ursinus.edu/~jarana/Ejercicios/self_check.html

All extra credit will be awarded at the discretion of the instructor.

V. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

The College's Standards of Academic Integrity are assumed to apply to your work for this course.
